Forty years ago today Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, TN. He had a dream. We often have dreams about how we want things to be. The time has come for things to change. A short time ago Barak Obama gave one of the best speeches in history regarding racism. We have finally come to the point where we may be able to deal with issues of race. It’s not going to be an easy road by any means. For the first time in a long time I believe it is really possible for us to achieve the change that King dreamed out. I believe we can change. There are other issues of bigotry that we must face, however, in order to be a more perfect union.

In honor of King’s Death I will be posting a series of my writings on bigotry and other social issues.

King’s entire “I have a dream” speech (August 28, 1963) = http://www.extremejustin.com/i-have-a-dream/

[Update: Since the time that I originally wrote this article, more video-based streaming options have become available. Netfllix is the clear choice for movie streaming. It will even work with Playstation 3, XBOX 360, and Wii (Wii support is brand new). Many TV shows have been made available for streaming either through their own network's websites or hulu.com (most of these only work in the U.S. though. I currently recommend Zinc TV (windows version available at http://zinc.tv) for access to ALL of these streaming options.]

I’m not sure about you but I when I was a student I didn’t just have $3000.00 lying around. The Recording Industry Association of America is asking some USF (University Of South Florida) students to pay that much to avoid being sued in court for downloading music. Yes, this is for real and I even know the family of one of the students. What’s sad here is that most of the students I know can’t afford to pay fines like that. They just don’t have it. The message is clear. The RIAA has taken on anyone and everyone that opposes them. Here’s an article on the USF situation : USF KEEPS WATCH ON STUDENTS’ MUSIC
On college campuses it is a bad idea to download movies or music. Thankfully there are options to a lot of the same material legally at a low cost of less than 20 or 30 a month out of your pocket.

As far as movies go you cannot legally get movies that are in theaters. Yeah, I know. But for regular movies there is at least one option if not more. Vongo.com can be found at http://www.vongo.com and offers several newer and older movies for download by subscription. The current price is about 10 dollars a month. I have never used nor reviewed this site. There are at least a couple of sites that allow you to pay to download movies like pay per view but hey—if you could afford that you wouldn’t be reading this now would you? But there are also DVD rental subscriptions. Netflex and Blockbuster are the 2 biggest with the most comparable options. I would look at BOTH before deciding. I have been a netflix customer for years and have had no problems (in fact the movies get to your house extremely fast these days) but Blockbuster offers some availability of movies in retail stores. Some public libraries offer free DVDs to check out but in my experience 3 times out of 5 the DVDs need cleaning before they can be played IF they are not too badly scratched.

There are currently 2 big sites involved in music subscriptions (maybe even more that I am missing). Rhapsody (from real.com) began by offering subscription ability to PLAY music (not download) and to buy music to burn directly to a CD (but not download as protected). They now offer Rhapsody to go which offers the ability to download music to your portable devices (just not ipod because Apple sucks like that). While Napster also offers Streaming (which might be really good for your parties) their post impressive service is Napster To Go which offers many many titles that you can put on your portable device as well as play from your computer. Just “save” them to your computer and you can play them from any player that supports protected files such as WinAmp and Windows Media Player. I use it myself and at less than $15 a month it beats getting sued. Now unless you purchase those titles forever (which usually costs about 99 cents a song) you can only play them as long as your Napster service is current. The irony of Napster is that they WERE the first illegal music sharing site and had to change or perish after being sued by the RIAA.

I’m not saying to you what to do here. I’m just saying there are options out there that you won’t get sued for.

In a perfect world we would be able to pay a small fee and get all the free music and movies we want legally in any way we choose. But we don’t live in a perfect world. And I only wish there were a book subscription service like this. I mean we can get most books free at the library but not in a legal computer format? Oh well.

Has everything on ABC’s “Lost” been confusing to you since the end of the 2006-2007 Season. That’s because Lost switched from flashing back, a method used on both Lost and it’s sister show Alias since the shows started, to flashing forward—something leaving viewers rather confused.

***SPOILER WARNING***

Do not read further if you have not seen the episodes of lost up to and including the Feb. 14, 2008 episode and intend to watch them anytime in the future.

***SPOILER WARNING***

In the season finally last season the switch was made at the end of the show. It wasn’t obvious at first and those using TiVos, DVRs, PVRs, and felt like they had to rewind the show to figure out what the hell just happened. The shocker was that Kate and Jack were revealed to have made it off of the island but that life had sucked since they got back.

But wait, that part shouldn’t be a surprise. The previous seasons all used flashbacks to show how much everyone’s life sucked before they got there. There were a couple of people I could never figure out like why Rose and Bernard were there??? But, for the most part, the rest were better off on the island if the “others” left them alone.

With this new season, they have been flashing forward and flashing back! So to help ease the confusion here are a few things to look at:

There are supernatural things going on with that island. That much has been obvious since the first episode. So it should be no surprise that a ghost is now on the show.

The flashbacks this season so far seem to be of the newest cast members—the supposed rescue crew whose primary purpose is not to rescue them and has yet to be revealed. Most of the members of the Oceanic Six have been identified so far. Ben would not be considered one of them because he is not from that flight so at the present moment it is: Jack, Kate, Hurley (Hugo), and Sayeid (spelling?). That only leaves 2 more unless I missed someone.

The biggest revelation of the lastest episode may have flown right past several people. A rocket launched from a ship to the island had a different time display than a clock the scientist had with him. While this could probably be described the equipment getting messed with by electromagnetic fields around the island…it doesn’t explain the launch was coordinated by a 2 way radio convo and the rocket reported back that it’s location at times BEFORE it got to the island. That’s right folks, we have a temporal anomaly on the island—something outside of the normal space-time continuum. That’s really confusing and would give anyone a headache. So here it is in plain English: Time doesn’t work the same on the island as it does in the outside world. Still confused? I’m sure a lot of people are. Can I explain it? I have no idea exactly what the writers are up to with this show. My suspicion is that they will have trouble adjustin to the time differences out there but I could be wrong.

As Netscape Dies….

On Dec. 28, 2007, just before the close of the year, AOL announced that it was pulling the plug on Netscape. They recommend switching to FireFox. Netscape has lost the browser war but FireFox is fighting on in it’s place. I still remember this friend of mine that had AOL way back in 1996. He was using Mosaic, one of the first web browsers that could display pictures (no, I’m not kidding, the web started out as text only). We thought it was truly the greatest thing since sliced bread (sliced bread having been invented the previous year — sorry I had to insert that Simpsons line here). Then we downloaded NetScape
and to our amazement background pictures were on pages.

FireFox eventually came out of all this. AOL still tried to release versions of Netscape for a while after this. They got all the way up to version 9. The will be ending support for Netscape on Feb. 1, 2008 (one year before the end of non-digital broadcast TV).

AOL is also ending its pay service and will become an add supported web service. For good or bad AOL is no longer an ISP. Really though, do most of us use AOL for anything anymore except AIM?

So long to Netscape…

The System Has Failed: Prologue

The System Has Failed

It has now been one year since the mid-term elections and now the Presidential elections are about a year away. A year ago the Democrats gained a bare majority of Congress but still the war goes on. Even worse a new war is on the horizon—a war that we cannot and will not win. We might as well all start learning Farsi now…

For a while politicians denied that they wanted war with Iran. These same denials were made before going to war with Iraq. Recently a non-binding resolution was passed to declare a part of the Iranian government a terrorist organization. We have thrown the proverbial spear into the foreign soil. The first step toward the coming war with Iran was taken.

We can’t even handle the current war. We have hired mercenaries to help us. We are allowing private armies to be amassed in our wars and even worse we are allowing these private armies to be on our own soil. How many of you know that Blackwater was in New Orleans after Katrina? We are allowing torture so long as we can call it something else. We have suspended constitutional rights suspended at one point with the Military Commissions Act. Our President and our Congress have approval ratings so low it is almost unbelievable. Turkey, one of our most important allies in the war on terror recalled the ambassador to the US because of a recent non-binding resolution in congress.

At this very moment the United States of America has no universal health care system. Approximately 50% of those filing bankruptcy were because of health care expenses. Approximately 75% of those HAD HEALTH INSURANCE. Why is that? It’s because we allow corporations to dictate our health care and NOT doctors or patients. We need a system where doctors and patients are not the ones in charge and NOT insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and hospital boards.

We have sold our country to corporations. Our politicians are bought and sold by lobbyists.

I’m tired. This is only a first draft—a prologue if you will. But I will leave with a quote from Dave Mustaine: “If theres a new way, Ill be the first in line. But, it better work this time.”
