As Netscape Dies….
On Dec. 28, 2007, just before the close of the year, AOL announced that it was pulling the plug on Netscape. They recommend switching to FireFox. Netscape has lost the browser war but FireFox is fighting on in it’s place. I still remember this friend of mine that had AOL way back in 1996. He was using Mosaic, one of the first web browsers that could display pictures (no, I’m not kidding, the web started out as text only). We thought it was truly the greatest thing since sliced bread (sliced bread having been invented the previous year — sorry I had to insert that Simpsons line here). Then we downloaded NetScape
and to our amazement background pictures were on pages.
FireFox eventually came out of all this. AOL still tried to release versions of Netscape for a while after this. They got all the way up to version 9. The will be ending support for Netscape on Feb. 1, 2008 (one year before the end of non-digital broadcast TV).
AOL is also ending its pay service and will become an add supported web service. For good or bad AOL is no longer an ISP. Really though, do most of us use AOL for anything anymore except AIM?
So long to Netscape…
